The Dodge Challenger GT is one of the coolest cars ever. It’s so unorthodox that it’s cool. It definitely carves out a niche that we didn’t know we needed.

Disclaimer: I’ve never sat in or driven a Challenger, let alone a GT. I adore them.

So it’s a Challenger that is AWD or something?

While I’m sad about the loss of AWD Hemi, I too like the Challenger GT. If the V6 muscle car is a compromise, the GT is a perfect compromise.

Well done throwback looks, a roomier interior than competitors, offered in cool colors, etc. We sell/lease a decent bit at the dealership I do marketing for. Living in an area that gets a decent bit of snow, they are great.

Also, fun fact, the GT is no longer the AWD trim for 19. Now they offer AWD on the SXT and the GT is a higher trim and can be opted with rwd now. Stupid, I know.

I’ve driven one for a weekend several years back from SF into Sonoma. Though that one had the V8. It is a pleasant enough of a car for GT duties. Rode well enough, it would scoot when I asked it to, handled curvy roads well (though the perceived width takes some getting used to) and the Orange paint was a nice contrast to all the white, black and grey cars surrounding us.

I do feel the Pentastar V6 should be enough for this car but the constant questioning of whether you should have gone for the larger engine will be there. In addition to that, I feel 4WD/AWD is necessary in most situations and only adds weight and expense (and if I can help it I will avoid these in my next car purchase) . I would take the premium spent on AWD and put that towards a second set of wheels with winter tires.

Well, I think it will boost volume for Do dge in snow country, so I think it’s smart on their part ( now put the 392 in it guys) .

And let’s face it, if every Mustang had AWD, C&C would be a lot safer.

This is the AWD one right? I like it just because I think it’s neat when AWD cars throw four rooster tails in a snowy lot, and every single one of these is guaranteed to do that at least once.

That’s unpopular with me. But luckily there are a lot of cars, so people can pick and choose to their own tastes.

I agree with you on one point: the realization that the Pentastar V6 is enough for the car but that lingering thought of a V8...

I’ve struggled with that train of thought. I drive a 2015 Durango V6 AWD and I am so happy with the powertrain and I don’t even want a HEMI in the Durango.

But...

In the Challenger with the exact same engine, I’m still conflicted. I feel like it’s not enough.

I’ve had a couple of V6 Challengers as rental cars. I’ll admit, they are fun to drive, but trying to determine if the power is “enough” is a tricky thing.

It was enough to get into trouble. It was enough to make it faster than most of the traffic out there. But it wasn’t enough to be faster than my WRX. It wasn’t enough to be faster than the Maxima I got for my next rental . It’s too porky to be much of a track car, but that applies to the bigger engines too.

So, I guess you have to ask, is it enough to meet your needs and keep a smile on your face?

I feel the same way. We have a ‘15 Durango V6 AWD and it doesn’t feel underpowered to me at all. But lately I’ve had an irrationally strong desire for a Challenger, but I don’t think I could go without a V8 in that. I think it’s because of the three current pony cars, the Challenger is the only one that still feels so unapologetically old school. The Mustang and Camaro are pretty much just straight up sports cars nowadays, and we’ve come to accept V6s and turbo 4's and etc in sports cars. E ven though they came in base models with straight 6s and the like, a V8 is just so ingrained into the idea of what a muscle car/pony car is, that the Challenger just doesn’t seem right without one.
